Key Insights from Anthony Curtin’s Presentation on the Australian Tech and Investment Ecosystem
Australia-US Relationship & Ecosystem Overview: The deepening Australia-US trade and innovation ties, supported by free trade agreements and collaboration in priority sectors, were emphasized. Key economic comparisons and regulatory insights were shared to help frame the business landscape for international investors.
Innovation and Technology in Australia: Australia’s history of technological innovation—spanning from early inventions to modern global successes like Canva and Atlassian—was highlighted alongside the government’s robust support for startups through tax incentives and grants.
Opportunities for Cross-Border Growth: Key sectors like digital technology, health, and advanced manufacturing were identified as high-growth areas for collaboration between Australian and US businesses. Strategies for US startups expanding into Australia and Australian companies accessing US markets were explored.
Navigating Challenges and Leveraging Advantages: While Australia’s tech ecosystem is relatively young compared to the US, its stable political environment, strong economy, and strategic location provide a compelling case for investment. Anthony also discussed solutions to challenges like skills shortages and fostering a more sophisticated venture capital market.
Merton Lawyers to launch Project Odyssey
In April 2025, Merton Lawyers will launch Project Odyssey, building on the success of Project Frontier. The initiative is the result of over 100 in-depth interviews with venture capital investors across Australia and the US, aimed at identifying key pain points in the investment landscape. Project Odyssey is designed to develop practical solutions that address these challenges, reinforcing Merton Lawyers’ commitment to supporting the innovation ecosystem and enhancing cross-border investment opportunities.
